This newspaper article appeared on the front page in the Journal NH (Newspaper) on Tuesday, March 14, 2006©. It was the result of a community service project between a Baptist Church in Texas, the house churches in Novo Hamburgo area, and the Military Police. Through this community service many doors have been opened and the simple churches strengthened.

Help Comes from the United States for the 3rd  Battalion of the Military Police

It started yesterday and will continue through Thursday. Several rooms in the administrative building and the insignia of the Third Battalion of the Military Police, in Novo Hamburgo, are being repainted by 21 American volunteers. They will also be involved in reorganizing the archives room of the battalion. The group, coming from Texas, arrived in the county this past weekend and will return to Texas on Saturday. The seven men and fourteen women, between the ages of 15 and 30, are from the Baptist Church. They have already visited more than 20 families carrying the message of the Bible. Last year, a group of North Americans visited the county from the same Baptist Church in order to get to know how things work at the military base where the work would take place. All of the materials for the remodeling have been provided by them.

The group began working yesterday painting rooms and will continue through Thursday.

North American Volunteers Paint the Building of the 3rd Battalion of the Military Police

The routine at the headquarters  of the 3rd Battalion of the Military Police in
Novo Hamburgo, in the neighborhood of Rodônia, began changing yesterday. Through Thursday, rooms in the administrative building and the insignia of the military base will be painted by volunteers who speak another language. The group consists of 21 Americans, from Texas. They will also reorganize the archives of the battalion. The group arrived in Novo Hamburgo this past weekend and will return to Texas on Saturday.

This group (seven men and fourteen women between the ages of 15 and 30) did not come to Novo Hamburgo by chance. The group, all Baptist, heard about the need through the “house church”, that was formed by two members of the 3rd Batallion (Sargeant Telmo Camargo and private Tarcisio Ferreira) and an American, Daniel Allen of Novo Hamburgo. After hearing the need they decided to carry out this community service. “The house church seeks to teach people the value of the message of the Bible. We have already visited more than 20 families in Novo Hamburgo, telling them about God. This Baptist Church in Texas heard about us and what we are doing through the house churches from Daniel,” said Sargeant Camargo.

The Visit – Last year, a group of Americans visited the county from the same Baptist Church in order to get to know how things work at the military base where the work would take place. “All the material for the work was purchased by the Americans” stated the commander of the 3rd Military Police Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Carlos Magno Oliveira. He praised the work of the group and the help given by Daniel’s two sons, John Paul and Joseph Daniel Allen, ages 9 and 12. They are both Americans who have lived here in Brazil for the past four years.

Ty Flippin (30) and Catherine Solheim (15) are a part of this group of Americans. Ty is a computer software salesman and Catherine is a student. Neither of them speak Portugues but both affirmed that they are enjoying the volunteer work. Flippin said that he considers this work important because the policemen also do an important work, “They are people who protect the community,” commented Ty yesterday afternoon, stopping for a brief moment while carrying paint cans in and out of the building.
